U.M.O.

The multifunctional U.M.O. (Unidentified Magical Object) and U.M.O2 from UM Project are playful benches and small low tables that can be used in two positions.

In a child’s room, its placement and function could change daily — and the aluminum inserts can house everything from art supplies to plush toys.

They are made from sustainably harvested cork (U.M.O.) or upholstered felt over wood frame (U.M.O2). And, yes, they are for children of all ages, even for you!

Abitacolo: Bruno Munari’s Kid Space Machine (1971)

image

Munari’s abitacolo is a place to hang clothes, store toys, affix art and to sleep.

image

It’s adaptable to the personality of the inhabitant, at every moment transformable

Munari described it this way:

two meters high

it’s made of steel with an epoxy skin

it’s a structure reduced to the essentials

a space delimited and yet open

adaptable to one or two poeple

it can even hold twenty

although this is not recommended because

of the difficulty of moving

it weighs fifty-one kilos

it’s two meters wide by eighty centimeters

it’s a large object that casts no shadow

it’s an inhabitable module

it’s a habitat

it contains all personal things

it’s a container of microcosms

it’s a placenta of plastic-coated steel

a place to meditate

and at the same time

a place for listening to music that you like

a place to read and study

a place to recieve visitors

a place to sleep

a lair, light and transparent

or closed

a space hidden in the midst of people

a real space

your presence renders furnishings superfluous

dust doesn’t know where to settle

it’s the minimum but gives the maximum

numbered but unlimited

habitat is the environment

adaptable to the personality of the inhabitant

at every moment transformable

h220430: Owl chair

Gotta love this awesome kid’s chair by Japanese design firm, h220430! Owl chair can be assembled without any tools or additional parts, children are able to build this chair with their own hands. This chair is made from a single piece of EVA lumber, similar to creating origami with one piece of paper. I need an adult size for myself (vía Owl Chair by h220430 » Yanko Design)

Elena Nunziata has designed a set of five pieces of furniture that stimulates the child‘s power of imagination.
The focus of the research project was on creating educational and engaging furniture for children’s bedroom. Neutral and simple shapes have been carefully designed to meet both the needs of children as well as being attractive for adults.
Melvin, the bedside table, is our favorite.
